Here we are for the second wrap-up of 2023!

Here are all my full reviews for January:

  1. Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson
  2. Pride, Prejudice and Peril by Katie Oliver
  3. Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas
  4. The Traitor’s Kiss by Erin Beaty
  5. A Different Kind of Happy by Rachaele Hambleton
  6. The House in the Cerulean Sea by T. J. Klune (Magical Readathon)

Vespertine by Margater Rogerson

Themes: YA Fantasy, Paranormal

My rating: 4/5

Quick review: Despite not liking it as much as An Enchantment of Ravens, I still really enjoyed this book. I think Margaret Rogerson has a real talent for writing standalones with interesting and vivid worlds and characters you are rooting for. I liked both Artemisia and the Revenant, and how their histories made their relationship both complex and credible. Plus, they both were funny in their own way, which is one of the main things I love in a book (I especially loved the Revenant’s dry humour). Finally, I found that the story was a bit of a change compared to what I usually find in YA fantasies and widely different from the other book I read by this author.

Pride, Prejudice and Peril by Katie Oliver

Themes: Adult, Cosy Mystery, Contemporary

My rating: 3,5/5

Quick review: I enjoyed the concept of this book even though some elements of the execution bothered me. First, if you tell me a cosy mystery combined with a re-writing of one of my favourite books, you’re sure I’ll pick it up. And it was indeed cosy with a pretty good mystery. The main point that lowered my rating was the characters and especially the main ones that were a bit too condescending towards our heroine for my taste. I also disliked the love triangle, which I hope will be given up in the next volume. The mystery is enough for the book to stand on its own!

Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas

Themes: Fantasy, YA

My rating: 5/5

Quick review: This one will be brief and I’ll just say that I LOVED this book! I think it will probably be my favourite in the series with the first one. The worldbuilding and character development are perfect and Rowan… I don’t need to say anything else 😉

The Traitor’s Kiss by Erin Beaty

Themes: YA fantasy, romance

My rating: 4/5

Quick review: I liked the idea behind this book and its execution. While remaining very YA in its tropes and characters, the latter was executed well enough for me to go on with my reading. I would have liked a more complex worldbuilding that differentiates a bit more from the other YA fantasies but the one we have here is still enough for the reader to immerse in the story. It wasn’t groundbreaking but good enough for me to tell you that I’ll probably read the rest of the series one day.

A Different Kind of Happy by Rachaele Hambleton

Themes: Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Family

My rating: 4/5

Quick review: This book was one of the two I’ve read this month that is a bit outside my comfort. But as for the other one, I don’t regret reading it! It was a cosy, heartwarming read that depicted the joys and challenges a recomposed family can bring.

The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J.Klune (Magical Readathon)

Themes: Fantasy, Romance, LGBT

My rating: 5/5

Quick review: It was the heartwarming, feel-good book I was promised it would be. I loved the characters and especially the children. The writing was quite good and I enjoyed how it distinguished the two parts of Linus’s life. The morality behind the story is important and well explained, without being too much and taking the reader for a child.

How was your reading month? Any good books to share?

Note: Most synopses are taken from Goodreads.

  1. I keep hearing about The House in the Cerulean Sea, I could really use some feel-good reading after finishing two harrowing war books – All Quiet on the Western Front and Half of a Yellow Sun. They were excellent books but not comforting, to say the least. I am immersing myself in Diana Wynne Jones and Terry Pratchett at the moment for March Magics, so that helps as an antidote.
